Artist Testimonals

  • "Sustaining a career in the landscape of today's music industry isn't possible without diversity. I can't think of a single entity that I interface with that is as spry, and forward thinking as Sheet Happens. From the utmost attention to detail with core endeavours like their official transcriptions, to being an invaluable resource for independent artists through their vinyl program and more, SH are a staple for, and frankly the backbone, to many of us in the newer school of independent artists.

Sheet Happens carries the hallmark of any significant company or product with staying power and longevity, which is to meet the needs of a given niche or community, and to solve an integral problem. Tablature has long been utilized by musicians, but there was never a benchmark, or a standard to ensure the quality of the product. Long gone are the days of wondering whether or not the hieroglyphs you happened upon in a dark corner of the internet are accurate. If it says Sheet Happens on it, you know it's the real deal.

In an industry as whacky and unpredictable as the modern world of music, I will always place my bet on an operation run by artists, for artists. Real world experience is the difference between those who do, and those who read about doing. The Sheet Happens team is a group of bonafide do-ers. Do-nuts, in fact. A baker's dozen of certified donuts. Boy do I love donuts."

  • "I first started working with Sheet Happens simply out of excitement to get to interact with one of my favourite bands (Protest the Hero), but as luck would have it, they're equally exceptional at running a tab company.

I likely never would have even released tabs (or vinyl for that matter) without their encouragement and collaboration, but now I look forward to putting together new books, vinyl, merch spreads, etc with them every time; it always turns out amazing.

I've also come to the conclusion that their transcription team are infinitely better musicians than me - the only edits we ever make are very slight position changes, and usually the positions they suggest are what I end up playing live because they're easier.

The only downside is that they refuse to relocate their entire business to Australia so we can hang out more. I think this is pretty selfish of them.

PS. I am being held for ransom, please help me."

  • "To sum up Sheet Happens, they’re a company and a bunch of really cool people who ‘get it’. It makes sense right; they were founded by members of Protest the Hero who probably looked at their experience getting their music transcribed and thought, ‘We could do this better.” And they can.

Everything about their process is about working to the needs of the artist. You need your music transcribed? They’ll do it for you. You transcribed your music but need it formatted and edited? They’ll do that for you too. You want to insert panels of manga into a tab book? They’re not sure why you’re asking, but they’ll do that too.

I can’t thank the people at Sheet Happens enough for being super patient, flexible, and for coming up with all these cool ideas for merch so I don’t have to. I’m also looking forward to the day when I come up with a tab book idea that even they think is too stupid to do, but that day hasn’t come yet!"

  • "Playing in Archspire means you have to be comfortable writing in a jamspace, jamming out new ideas on the fly. This means that we don't generally send each other guitar pro files; we demo out ideas once we've learned them and then hit the studio.

Sheethappens has given us the confidence to continue working the best way we know how, while still keeping the door open for a fully transcribed book after the record has been completed.

Their transcribers are incredibly accurate, and often when we receive the first draft, there are only position changes to be made. Which blows us away every single time.

The books we have released with them have all been of the highest quality, the editing and revision process is always smooth, and communication is a breeze. One of my favorite parts of releasing an album is seeing the finished tab book, and giving fans of the music the opportunity to learn our riffs.

Also, hearing our music in that sweet, sweet guitar pro tone: priceless. Thanks SheetHappens! We love you!"

  • "Before SH, an instrumental guitar player didn't have a lot of options for releasing records, merch, or having an accurate tab book.

I've had a close relationship with them for many years, and I have trusted them 100% with everything we've worked on together.

I am honoured to get to work so closely with SH!"

  • "I’ve been working with Sheet Happens since 2015 when we collaborated on a guitar tab book for our album Found in Far Away Places. Since then, we have created books for our entire back catalogue, every new album, and even a book for our b-side tracks.

The process has always been extremely effortless for me as an artist. Their transcribers are incredible and make the editing process painless. I consistently reference the Guitar Pro files they provide when re-learning material for our live shows. These tab books are as valuable to me as they are to any fan who may purchase them. Not only that, they have created an archive of all of our songs and how to play them that will be around long after I’m dead and gone. I think that is priceless in itself.

I’m grateful for my band’s relationship with the folks at Sheet Happens and for the amazing products they have helped us create over the years. I’m always looking forward to the next book!"

  • "As an artist, I cannot express my gratitude enough to Sheet Happpens for their tab books and vinyl releases that we have collaborated on.

It all started with a chat and eventual intro from fellow SH artist and friend, Plini, when I asked about pressing vinyl for my solo acoustic releases. This conversation eventually led to the creation of transcription books for Cynic's music.

The attention to detail and dedication of SH in capturing the essence of our music is fantastic. Historically, Cynic songs have been notoriously difficult to decipher due to their intricately layered guitar work. However, thanks to SH, musicians are now equipped with the key to decode the prog madness!

Their transcription books have provided invaluable resources for musicians to accurately learn the tunes. I am also excited that SH has beautifully showcased my solo acoustic releases 'Mythical Human Vessel' through their vinyl releases. The colors and radical layouts are a cut above. SH has truly been a dream partner!"

Our Book Making Process

  • 1

    PARTNERSHIP
We partner directly with artists, their management teams or their publisher on every project. We put a huge importance on paying artists fairly and on time, so it's crucial to us that we have a tight and transparent relationship with every artist we work with. At the end of the day, we don't exist without our artists and their brilliant work!

    TRANSCRIPTION
Most of our books are transcribed from studio guitar stems (isolated and often raw performances straight from when the record was tracked). This is the best way for our transcribers to identify accurate pitch, articulation, and fret positions. We use these stems to build the transcription, one instrument at a time. Many of the records we work on are layered with many tracks, so these stems are often crucial to the accuracy of the final product!

    EDITING
We then pass the transcription back to the artist, who dives in and provides feedback on what we think they played in the studio. Many of our artists are very hands-on when it comes to editing. Video playthroughs of tough passages and even lengthy video calls with the assigned transcriber on their project are often required to get every note perfect.

    BOOK LAYOUT
Once the transcription is completely finished and signed-off on by the artists themselves, we move the project into "book layout." This portion of the book-making procedure involves a few steps in itself. We first arrange the bars of music in the most reader-friendly way we can, making sure every applicable section of music is identified clearly and time-coded (should the reader like to reference the actual studio tracks when learning). We then make sure we map out the proper combinations of instruments to be viewed at any given time. This process allows the reader to only learn what is currently being played, omitting any resting instruments. Finally, it's time to incorporate the original album artwork into the design of the book. Most of the tab books we learned from growing up had no colour, and very little thought put into visual design. Not our books! We maintain that each of these music books is a work of art in itself!
