Riff Playbooks: Luke Hoskin of Protest The Hero
Introduction
Luke Hoskin, guitarist of Protest The Hero, knows how to tap out a major lead. Throughout the PTH catalogue, you can hear this technique being developed and utilized more and more to become a staple part of their sound, which has served to both excite the shred-hungry listener, and help solidify the band as one with a unique musical voice. Luke and Protest The Hero have come to be known for this particular brand of guitar hook, among other things (fart jokes, etc), and "Mist" is a fantastic example of this (tapping, not fart jokes).
Mist was one of the later singles released from their 2013 album, Volition. It is an ode to one of Canada\'s island provinces, Newfoundland, and it sure sounds like it. Aside from the blatant lyrics, the songs core melody is a very uplifting one - bordering on "folky" at times. It paints a pretty accurate sonic picture of the place. So visit Newfoundland, take a walk up Signal Hill, hang out with some puffins, and slam some screech. Failing that, learn the song "Mist" by Protest The Hero. In the "Volition" Guitar Transcription Book, we are looking at page 133, bars 1 - 4.
And here's Luke slowing it down for us:
As per usual, we punished Luke with some questions once we had broken him down:
