Riff Playbooks: Ivanyi | Omen Faustum

The "Riff Playbooks" column is designed to make you a better player. By gleaning some insight into the technique, composition, and execution of these fine riffs by fine SH artists, you are bound to make headway in your own playing. We cordially invite you to steal a page from our books in order to expand your own diabolical playbook of musical wizardry (not literally though, the books are expensive to create).

James Norbert Ivanyi is back for his second Sheet Happens Riff Playbook! This time with a section from the absolute rollercoaster of a song, Omen Faustum. In this section of the song Ivanyi hybrid picks his way through a wild blues rock inspired solo, bookended by some equally twangy and fantastic passages that can only be described as a single coil prog rock bonanza. We can’t say enough about how impressive James Norbert Ivanyi’s writing and playing are, but you don’t have to take our word for it. Check out the video below, and better yet, download the free tab here and give this a try yourself!

Omen Faustum (also the title of the album / book which this song belongs to) is a wealth of masterfully and meticulously constructed guitar work, and after watching the video and grabbing the free tab, we highly recommend that you check out the full book right here. There’s a lot to learn in this small section of music alone, and this is just scratching the surface of what Ivanyi has to offer.
