Riff Playbooks: Bleed From Within | A Depth That No One Dares

Introduction

The "Riff Playbooks" column is designed to make you a better player. By gleaning some insight into the technique, composition, and execution of these fine riffs by fine SH artists, you are bound to make headway in your own playing. We cordially invite you to steal a page from our books in order to expand your own diabolical playbook of musical wizardry (not literally though, the books are expensive to create).

Craig Gowans, lead guitarist of Bleed From Within certainly has a way with heavy metal guitar. In this instalment of the riff playbooks series, Craig runs through this fantastic section from the song “A Depth That No One Dares” from their most recent LP Fracture. This short but sweet demonstration gives us a glimpse of both the infallible technique and writing ability of Gowans, cycling between picking and tapping in a handful of variations of this wonderfully constructed idea. It’s heavy but melodic, technical without being overly complicated, and in general looks and sounds like a lot of fun. Learning this section, and really anything from the Bleed From Within catalogue, is a sure fire way to up your metal guitar skills, and have a great time doing it.
