August Burns Red guitarists JB and Brent will be the first to admit they are self taught. That term lends itself to the idea that they might be unseasoned players. That perhaps one couldn't learn much from the techniques they put to use on the guitar.
However, the music from "Rescue and Restore" strongly suggests otherwise. The album is instead full of clever playing and articulate song craft. Each phrase thought out and executed fluidly - with each guitarist determined to compliment the other.
In a world of egocentric playing in heavy music, ABR refresh us with a calculated approach to playing fast. You bet your balls they can do it, but that doesn't mean they are going to rub it in your face.
That said though, the album IS packed with face melting riffery. Both players employ every technique under the sun on Rescue and Restore. They manage to pack this all in, mind you, without making the album feel crowded. "Self Taught"? Maybe. But ABR prove the term can be as endearing as it is misleading.
